Bodegas Altanza


History:

Bodegas Altanza was established in 1998 with the aim to construct a winery which could make high quality Rioja wines which are accessible to everybody.

It´s first wines which were predominantly Reserva and Gran Reservas which were released in 2002 under the Lealtanza brand name. Historically, Reserva wines are the wines that the winery owner would set aside for its most important visitors.

Vineyards:

60% of the grapes the winery uses come from their own vineyards. The winery has 200 hectares of vineyard and it is maintained by hand. No chemical products or pesticides are used so as not to harm the environment. Another measure that Bodegas Altanza has adopted is the orientation of their vineyards. Every year pruning, de-budding and the removal of excess bunches is carried out in order to obtain a reduced yield and an excellent organoleptic quality of the grapes which in turn produces top quality wines.

The remaining 40% of the grapes come from trusted vine farmers who look after their vineyards following guidelines set by Bodegas Altanza to ensure the quality. The treatment of the vineyard is key to the production of high quality wines at Bodegas Altanza.

Bodegas Altanza also has 70 hectares of olive trees. The olives that are harvested are made into organic extra virgin olive oil.


Winery:

The winery is located in the town of Fuenmayor, Rioja Alta and occupies 35,000 square metres of which 10,000 square metres are garden. The main building houses the offices and the social centre where the wines can be tasted. There is a dining room for visitors and a room dedicated to ageing Club member´s wines.

Elegant, traditional building materials have been used to in the design and construction of the Altanza winery, such as wood, stone and brick.

Lealtanza´s Rioja wines are characterised by an exceptional price quality relationship and are faithful to the traditional consumer of Rioja wines whilst taking into account modern trends. There are another two buildings where the lab, fermentation hall with 32 stainless vats can be found, a barrel cellar and a warehouse.


Wine Making:

Bodegas Altanza selects the best quality grapes which are principally of the Tempranillo variety for its elegant reserva wines. French oak barrels are used for the ageing to emphasise the quality of the grapes.

Bodegas Altanza uses the newest technology to make their top quality wines and carefully managed the temperature of their air conditioned barrel and bottle cellar where their best Rioja wines evolve. For their best wines they use large French Allier oak vats which have been installed by Bordeaux barrel makers from Séguin Moreau.


Prizes and Acknowledgements:

Bodegas Altanza has been awarded international prizes for its high quality Rioja wines. 10 of Bodegas Altanza´s wines have been awarded more than 90 Points by the American wine critic Robert Parker.
